The movies appeal to both the visual and auditory senses. Although some viewers and even filmmakers believe that the visuals used in the movie are most important, what we hear from the screen is just as important. To which, director Steven Spielberg remarks, that the eye perceives better when the sound is good (Monahan & Barsam). Every time a new film is released in theatres, we, the audience, anticipate popular music of some kind to accompany the visual pictures. With this in mind, it's astonishing to see how little scholarly material has been published about how and in what ways music operates in film in comparison to other kinds of culture.
